November 2018

In a surprise twist of events...this concept: End of Year Goals.

We've happily and gleefully entered the holiday season here in the U.S. For many people, these last two months of the year are a mixed drink of:

1 part "Excitement"

1 part "Close one eye and hope to control the damage", and

1 part "Oh forget it, I'll get back to my life goals in January"

Why?

Enter a newer, less talked about concept all together: End of year goals.

2 months, people! That's a long time. You might be thinking, "What can I possibly accomplish in 60 days?" Well, let's look at some other humans - and what they've been able to do in this short yet significant amount of time - for inspiration.

Nina Sankovitch read 60 books in 60 days. And then she continued to read one a day until she had ready 365 books by different authors by the end of a year. Can you imagine how much richer her life was after just 60 days with all of that new insight?

What about Louis Michael Figueroa? A 16 year old who made a promise to a friend dying of bone cancer to raise awareness for the disease by running across the whole United States, from New Brunswick, NJ to San Francisco, California in under 60 days. Can you imagine how many lives were touched by this amazing physical feat from such a young person?

If 60 days is now starting to feel like a long time to get stuff done, let's finish off with a Pakistani soldier, Yousuf Jamil, who planted 20,101 trees in 18 hours and 40 minutes.

I think it's clear that what holds us back from accomplishing great things, then, is very squarely and uniquely....ourselves. Humans are amazing and they are able to accomplish unbelievable feats. YOU are classified first and foremost by the title of human and YOU are also capable of amazing things. Believe it.

Research shows that people don't tend to accomplish their goals for several reasons. Among those, two that stand out are: lack of clarity and a thought-out plan of action.

If you don't know what your goal is specifically, how will you accomplish it? Goals that are too general, unrealistic (you will know this when you set up your specific plan), or having too many goals muddled together, are all reasons why people lack clarity in their goal setting.

If you know what your ONE goal is very clearly yet you fail to come up with a specific, time sensitive and measureable action plan, your clarity will not be of much help to you.

So, this November, I'm going to invite you to choose ONE goal that you would like to achieve in these next 60 days. Here are the guidelines:

1. Choose ONE specific, action-oriented and measurable goal.
2. Establish a plan that is very specific towards achieving this goal.

If you still feel like you need some more guidance, I'd love to offer some suggestions and a template to help you along the way.

At AG Fitness, we have just updated our Measures of Progress. This is a sheet that we use with our clients to make sure that our collective goals as a community of health and wellness enthusiasts are being met. It's a kind of Manifesto - a why we are here and what we hope to achieve. We invite our clients to add on to these goals if they want, but these are the baselines goals for our functional fitness, "live ready", health and wellness inspired studio.

Please take a moment to decide if the statements below rank from a 1-5 (one being the lowest and needing the most attention and 5 being the best and constituting an ideal level worthy of maintenance).

AG's Measures of Progress:

I feel confident in my physical capabilities: ______

I feel strong: ______

I have good endurance: ______

I enjoy my workout sessions: ______

My workout sessions fuel my whole person-social, emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual: ______

I'm consistent with my exercise program: _______

I eat food that nourishes me: _______

Eating is a stress free, enjoyable, and health-building part of my life: ______

I realize that my self-worth is not tied to what my body looks like: ______

I feel comfortable in my skin: ______

Once you've established your current baseline, choose ONE of your lowest answers and make it your goal to improve it by one point by the end of 2018. You have roughly 60 days...enough time to run across the U.S. and plant roughly 1 million two hundred thousand trees. You've got this!

Now comes the interesting part. You get to design your plan. Use this simple template to craft it.

On _____________________________________ (days),

I will ________________________________ (specific action, at a specific time, and at a specific place, for a specific amount of time) .

On the unlikely day that for whatever reason, I am unable to achieve my daily goal,

I will _________________________________ (specific action to compensate, at a specific time, and at a specific place for a specific amount of time) and still consider myself successful at having met my goal for the day.

To achieve this goal, I will need to ______________________________________________________ (set up/purchase/discuss/and agree with whatever party will need to be involved/ to make this goal a reality.)

Here is an example:

My goal is to feel strong by 2018. "Feeling strong" will be defined by completing this unique plan: On Monday, Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays, I will go to a Strength class at AG Fitness at 9 am, 6:30 pm, 6:30 pm, and 8:30 am respectively for 30 minutes each occasion. On the unlikely day that I am unable to achieve my daily goal, I will complete 3 sets of 15 reps of squats, lunges, push ups, crunches, skater lunges and high knees in my basement right before dinner for the amount of time all of these exercises take to be completed and I will still consider myself successful at having met my goal for the day. To achieve this goal, I will need to set up my schedule so that I don't plan calls or meetings at this time, I will need to purchase a class pack and new sneakers, I will need to discuss this with my husband to make sure he is on board and supports me with this endeavor and my nanny will need to agree to arrive 30 minutes earlier on Mondays so that I can make it to class.

I know you can achieve whatever "End of Year Goal" you set for yourself. I'd love to hear about it (email me your paragraph!) and I can't wait to celebrate with you at the beginning of 2019 when you've achieved it! I'm in your corner!

Cheers!

Angela
